A LATE ARRIVAL (without rival!)!!

A recently discovered duo of superbly painted and exquisitely crafted 1835 slide cover Schoolgirl Boxes from MISS CATHERINE FISKE'S SCHOOL of KEENE , NEW HAMPSHIRE. The smaller of the two boxes bear the inscription "Not Hannah's box 1835". This box is believed to have been painted by the Miss Catherine Fiske's student ELIZABETH SARAH HOWE (1813-1837). An 1831 pamphlet of Miss Fiske's "YOUNG LADY'S SEMINARY in KEENE, N.H."  was tucked away in the smaller of the two boxes. This pamphlet contains (in its text), the name ELIZABETH S. HOWE (1813-1837) and on its back, the handwritten name of Mary Eloisa Howe (1808-1837), who was the elder sister of  Elizabeth Sarah Howe. Also found with the boxes, is a calligraphic exercise book belonging to and signed within "Elizabeth S. Howe". "Hannah" may very well be Hannah L. Seaver (b. 1812), the classmate, close friend and possibly roommate at Miss Fisk'e boarding school. Hannah Seaver's name appears in the 1831 pamphlet along with Elizabeth Sarah Howe. Both Miss Fiske's pamphlet and the calligraphic booklet will be included with the sale of the boxes. The larger of the two boxes  measures 8 1/ 2” long by 5  5/8” wide and stands 2" tall. The smaller ("not Hannah's box 1835") measures 8  3/8" long by 4  13/16" wide and stands 1  15/16" tall. Each box is decorated with a centrally placed cover vignette of what is likely a view of Miss Fiske's School, from 2 different perspectives. Both boxes are profusely decorated on each of their four sides with wonderfully executed flora and fruit. The smaller box is crafted of  busy, "birdseye" maple and the larger of an amazingly strong "tiger" maple. The boxes are superbly constructed with tiny dovetails at their corner joints, compartmented interiors and superbly fit sliding covers or lids. The boxes are in IMMACULATE ORIGINAL CONDITION throughout! The Howe sisters were born in Jaffery, NH and were the daughters of Dr. Adonijah and Mary Woodbury Howe. Several other pieces of Howe family ephemera were found with these boxes. The other Howe family "paper" will be sold in a separate lot.

Two fine and historically important, 1808 schoolgirl watercolors worked at the BRADFORD (Mass.) ACADEMY by Charlotte TenneyEach of these outstanding watercolors have veiled AMERICAN patriotic themes that celebrate the spirit of Freedom and Liberty in a youthful America, by paying homage to earlier foreign Revolutions and Wars that were likely the subject of history lessons at Bradford Academy. The first, depicts a likeness of Lady Liberty who holds a tablet that honors our Constitution and the "RIGHTS of  A MAN and A CITIZEN". The "LADY" is seated in front of the tombstone of  3 martyrs of the French Revolution. Below, guarding the entire scene is a COURAGEOUS LION with his steadfast declaration " LIBERTE ....FRATERNITE Ou LA MORT" or "LIBERTY....TOGETHER or DIE"! The second, depicts a seated Lady Liberty who holds a walking staff and reviews a tablet which celebrates PEACE and loathingly predicting its end, in a message about the Roman Temple of Janus. The tablet reads " In the Year 159 the Temple of Janus was shut, which rarely happened in Rome, but upon the breaking out of new wars was presently open again". Each watercolor on paper was found in their original frames, complete with wooden backboards. Overall, in frames, they measure 13  1/8” by 11  ½” and 12  ¾” by 11 ¼”, respectively. Pencil inscriptions appear on each backboard. Discovered recently in a Northern, MA home.
