A RECENTLY DISCOVERED AMERICAN CARTOGRAPHIC RARITY

An unlisted and perhaps singular example of  the JOSEPH W. TUTTLE 1841 hand colored LINEN MAP of the UNITED STATES . We have been unable to locate another COLORED example which bears the Tuttle printed signature of: "Printed and Published by Joseph W. Tuttle :::::::::::: Boston, Mass" (his street address appears purposely obliterated on all known copies). The map is printed on LINEN and  bears this engravers mark:  "Engraved by G.W. Boynton  Washington St.  Boston". Measures: 28"  x  25  1/2" (64 cm x 62 cm). Condition is very good and well documented in our many detailed photos. Found recently in a coastal Maine attic.                AUCTION LOT #95

RECENT DISCOVERIES FROM CENTRAL MAINE!!

From a home in Waterville and a farmhouse in Madison yesterday (11/13/2013)
these two stellar Maine examples of their forms, are as fresh to market as it gets!

The eye dazzling DOUBLE SIDED Maine game board is in the BEST CHROME YELLOW and DEEP INDIAN RED paints! In a delightful size of 16 1/2" x 16 1/4" (due to expected shrinkage), the board's bed is of  thick stock measuring a full 1  1/2". Its applied trim moldings measure a tad wider than 1  3/4" giving the piece suitable "guard rails" for a hotly contested match of either checkers or backgammon! Untouched original condition throughout!

Central Maine ca. 1890.

The small and very early "LAPPED BAND" Firkin is "hands down" the finest example of cooperage we have ever seen. As tight today as the day it was crafted, its precisely cut locking bands, tapered and shaped bail handle, exquisitely perfect square side "buttons" and to top it all off.......a remarkable bevel at the inner top edge of each of its staves!! Add both a superb surface and an entertaining, stylishly scripted message (likely from its original owner) on its underside : "STOLEN FROM C.B. WADE ...... ATHENS.......WADE  V.G.O."! Athens, Maine borders Madison to its northeast. Measures  7   3/4''tall (11 1/4'' with handle erect) 8'' top rim diameter  x  9" bottom rim diameter.  Superb original condition throughout!

AN IMPORTANT RECENT DISCOVERY

Included in the MARTHA STEARNS collection are items pictured in her book, such as the REMARKABLE 18TH Century CREWEL DECORATED  SEWALL FAMILY BLANKET which exhibits crewel embroidered vignettes that are symbolic of a burgeoning America! THE SEWALL FAMILY BLANKET
"A COMPENDIUM of AMERICAN DESIGN"*

Appearing in a full page photograph as PLATE 16 of her pioneering 1940 hardcover book "HOMESPUN and BLUE", the American Crewel Work Scholar and Author MARTHA GENUNG STEARNS describes the 18th century Sewall Family Blanket on page 56 :

The symbol which came closest to expressing the high hopes of America, at this time received its commission from Benjamin Franklin. In John Fiske's account of the Federal Convention the incident is thus described: On the back of the president's (George Washington) quaint black armchair there was emblazoned a half-sun, brilliant with its gilded rays. As the meeting was breaking up and Washington rose, Benjamin Franklin pointed to the chair and made it the text for prophecy: "AS I HAVE BEEN SITTING HERE ALL THESE WEEKS" he said "I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED WHETHER YONDER SUN IS SETTING OR RISING.......BUT NOW I KNOW THAT IT IS A RISING SUN"! From that moment, the Rising Sun meant the young Republic, whose strength and energy were jus beginning to ascend. On the little SEWALL BLANKET we have it, worked in saffron and indigo, with the bright half uppermost and rays surrounding it. This piece of much mended woolen homespun is a compendium of American design in itself. Probably done about the end of the Revolution, it carries motives that represent the whole period of America's entity. Here are the Tudor rose, the oak leaf and grapes from England; the carnation and the pomegranate and the suggestion of the plant springing from the earth's orb, of India; the Chinese wave-form; the dove with a sprig in its beak and the bleeding heart, bunch of currant, daisy and clover from the American out-of-doors; and the significant little rising sun worked between the scalloped divisions of the whole border. The family initial, a winged S, completes one corner.

RARE & HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT SOUTH CAROLINA SECESSION BANNER with IMPORTANT McMASTER FAMILY PROVENANCE!

Discovered recently in a home near Bangor, Maine this heretofore unknown SOUTH CAROLINA SECESSION BANNER has been remarkably preserved! The watercolor on silk exhibits poignant symbolism with its single star (note the absence of the crescent moon) signifying the South Carolinians desire to be "fully independent" and also the interestingly and significant "broken coconut" situated at the BOTTOM of the Palmetto tree, symbolic of the "FALL" OF and "SPLIT" FROM the Union! Once the property of the noted author, South Carolina military historian and World War II Submarine Boat Captain Fitzhugh McMaster. A TALE of TWO TABLES

These remarkable, recently discovered 18th Century New England Tavern Tables are each didactic in their own very special ways!
The MAINE turned leg example is in the most amazing crusty surface with such pleasing elements as its underside "butterfly" splines, which have served it well, preserving a flat, wonderfully "scrubbed" breadboard ended top that exhibits gnarly hand forged "T Head" nails and wooden peg construction. In full height of nearly 27" and with its top measuring 45  1/2" x 29  1/2" the table is in exquisite proportions. An untouched and superior example, recently discovered in an early Hancock County, Maine home!! AUCTION LOT #47
The VERY EARLY NEW HAMPSHIRE tavern table exhibits fine vase and ring turnings along with incredible splay to its legs and superior cabinetry which result in a handsome stance and imposing presence that is worthy of a supply of mead and flip, all hopefully being displayed in front of the crackling fire of an 18th century fireplace! Discovered recently in the attic of an 18th century NH home which once served as the local tavern! AUCTION LOT #60

Another Shaker gem!

Found in a shoebox in the attic of an early home near Augusta, Maine this TINY painted oval box was laying alongside the spectacular Mt. Lebanon example that we sold at our July 2013 auction!!!
