Detail of
a hand drawn map (dated 1805) of a plot of land in the original
plan for the Town of Vienna. The map is signed by the noted land
surveyor Jedediah Prescott of Winthrop, Maine. |
|
Above
are excerpts from letters of the family of Milton Bradley (born
Vienna, Maine 1836) to George Bradley Whittier (Milton's first
cousin). These two examples are written in 1840 by the parents of
Milton Bradley (Lewis and Frances Lyford Bradley) and describe the
pesky Milton in his toddler stage. There is also historically
important material from the Bradleys having to do with their
Starch Mill in Mercer. These letters are part of a large lot of
very early deeds, indentures and correspondence from early Vienna
settlers that include the Whittier, Mooers, Bradley, Sanborn and
Brown families. Some of the earliest (18th century) material is
from Deerfield, NH which is from where many of Viennas earliest
settlers came. |
