We hope to see you all in Gardiner! You may click to enlarge many of these images. A late addition of period Civil War field gear from a soldier of the 24th Maine Regiment. The lot consisting of Regulation Union Infantry issued Knapsack, Haversack, Rain Poncho and Canteen. Found together, the Knapsack and Poncho bear the stenciled ID "Pvt. Purley (sic) Whittier, Vienna, Me. Co. K 24th, Me. Reg't". The 24th Maine Reg. Volunteers saw duty in the department of the Gulf. According to records at Historical Data Systems the Regiment lost one lone soldier in action but better than 100 brave troops died from sickness while hundreds of others were incapacitated by diseases bred by the warm climate of the Gulf area. A rare identified grouping of Maine Civil War field gear.
Carl Sprinchorn (Am. 1887-1971). Watercolor on paper titled "Sugarloaf and Mt. Katahdin" signed l.r. with frame placard reading "Carl Sprinchorn Crommett Hill 1940". Sight measurements are 15" by 22". Has Sprinchorn's handwritten inscription verso that reads "Sugarloaf with Mt. Katahdin in the distance Carl Sprinchorn, Shinn Pond, ME ca. 1940". An old Brunswick, Maine art gallery tag is on the back as well. In superb condition and beautifully framed. Measures 24" by 31 1/2". A rare Katahdin view by a highly regarded Maine painter. An excellent selection of Crooked Knives including some superior examples
