A rare 1842 handwritten letter by the
noted American statesman and iconic
political figure of the early 19th century
HENRY CLAY (1777-1852) of Kentucky. The letter is penned at
Lexington, Kentucky by Clay to political
supporters in New Lisbon, Ohio for the
purpose of declining an invitation to speak at a meeting there. This
vibrant rendering is signed in two locations by the hand of this
legendary public figure who counted amongst his positions, the U.S.
Secretary of State, United States Senator from Kentucky, Speaker of
the U.S. House of Representatives. He was the 1832 National Republican
Party (soon to become the "Whigs") candidate for U.S. President and
was defeated by the incumbent Andrew Jackson. He then lost the Whig
party nomination in 1840 to William Henry Harrison. He ran for and won
the 1844 Whig nomination to run against the Democrat James K. Polk, a
race in which he lost by a very close margin.
In 1957 a committee chaired by Senator
John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts, named Henry Clay as one of the five
greatest Senators in U.S. history. He was a favorite of Abraham
Lincoln, who once said of Clay "he was my beau ideal...of a great
man". In 1852 Henry Clay died at the age of 75 at Washington, D.C.
