A fine 18th Century “Pad Foot” QUEEN ANNE TEA TABLE that retains its original red wash and full height. Superbly “scrubbed” pine top with BIRCH frame and legs. The ca. 1760 table is of Southern Maine or NH origin. Its oval top measures 32 ½” x 25”. The table stands 24 ¼” tall.

Fresh from a Wisconsin farmhouse, this FINE 19th Century Painted JEWELER’S TRADE SIGN. The painted wooden “F. DENIS” giant, double sided “Pocket Watch” sign measures 27 ½” diameter at its bezel and 38 ½” tall to the top of its standing stem bail.

An OUTSTANDING TRIO of recently discovered EARLY 19TH Century DOME TOP BOXES.

Including a superb and classically PAINT DECORATED small MAINE document box in red & black grain painted ground with superb green and yellow free hand decoration; A larger “SplashyCortland County, NY VinegarPAINT DECORATED Storage Box; Last but certainly not least is a MOST AMAZING small HAND BLOCKED WALLPAPER & FREE HAND PAINT DECORATED document box that was found recently near Waldoboro, Maine. Dimensions are: Maine Box: 17 ¾” wide x 8 ¾” deep x 7” tall. NY Box: 22 ¾” wide x 13” deep and stands 10 1/8” tall. Waldoboro, Maine Box: 15” wide x 81/2” deep and stands 6 ¼” tall.

This EARLY 19th Century NH Oil Painting on Canvas is a delightful likeness of the “OLD MAN of the MOUNTAIN”. Unsigned, the painting is in a period and perhaps original lemon gold frame. Cleaned and re-stretched (not re-lined) in 1984. Other than the obvious worn area, the painting “black lights” superbly. A very early and wonderfully “folky” view of an iconic (and sadly no longer available) White Moutain view! Measures 19 ¼” x 23 ½” (overall) and 15 1/4” x 19 1/4” (sight).

An outstanding, small and early 19th century folk art watercolor portrait of a young, full standing, blue dressed girl who is clutching a flower basket. Measures 7 1/8” x 5 1/8” (overall) 5 ¾” x 3 ¾” (sight). Period lemon gold frame that is possibly original.

A small but IMPORTANT selection of RECENTLY DISCOVERED EARLY BOOKS to include a recently discovered and SUPERB example of the 1616 first edition of “THE SURVEYOR” by AARON RATHBORNE; A FINE example of the 1685 second edition of FLETA; A 1780 first edition “ELECTRICITY” by Rev. JOHN LYON and a 1642 French edition of Le PARFAIT AMBASSADEUR by Le Sievr LANCELOT.

Of remarkable MAINE SHAKER craft, this large eight drawer TEXTILE CASE was found in a home near Brunswick, Maine! Likely from the Shaker community at Sabbathday Lake or Alfred, Maine the chest exhibits the best of Maine Shaker cabinetry. The chest was “built in” originally although its ends are nicely hand planed and it would show perfectly as a “stand alone” chest. From its crisply chamfered drawer bottoms, tiny hand made square nails, perfect dovetailed joints and the most amazing “moth proof” drawer lips (exhibiting 1/64” side lips for remarkable sealing), the chest is didactic in its construction! Measures 59 ¾” wide x 15 ¾” deep x 60 ¼” tall.

LARGE and UNTOUCHED 18th Century wooden staved COVERED TANKARD

This Tankard is said to have been gifted by NINA FLETCHER LITTLE to her close friend ALICE ANDREWS (b. 1891) of Winchester, Massachusetts. The tankard, in UNMOLESTED natural COLOR and CONDITION, is of REMARKABLE 18th century COOPERAGE that has allowed it to remain as tight as the day its exquisite bands were joined! Mrs. Andrews and her husband Earle Andrews Sr. were close personal friends of Nina Fletcher Little and husband Bertram. Alice and Earle Sr. often entertained the Littles at their Highland St., Winchester home. Many of Mrs. Andrews treasures were purchased from the Littles over many years of friendship and business. The late Earle Andrews Jr. (1922-2002) of Rochester, NH (Alice and Earle Little’s only child), related tales of stories heard while he played beneath the dining room table as a child when the Littles came to visit. This “TOP SHELF” tankard is regal in its presence, standing a full 11” tall and measuring a full 8” at its bottom rim diameter and a full 5” diameter at its top rim!

Provenance available to the buyer.

An AMERICAN REDWARE GEM

This large remarkably decorated 18th Century redware SUGAR POT measures 7 ½” tall and 9” wide from handle to handle. Its slip decoration is profuse and its form boldly stated. An attribution to the Revolutionary War Potteries at Charlestown, Massachusetts has been suggested or perhaps a PA origin. But for minor glaze loss in a few isolated areas (see photos which may be expanded by clicking on), the piece is in outstanding original condition and without cracks or structural damage.

Discovered in the mid 1970s, among many rarities in the collection of ALICE ANDREWS (b. 1891) of Winchester, Massachusetts. As mentioned above, in the description of the 18th century wooden tankard, Mrs. Andrews and her husband Earle Andrews Sr. were close personal friends of Nina Fletcher Little and husband Bertram.

PERHAPS THE FINEST FOLK ART CARVED, PAINTED and INLAID MAINE SWIFT EVER FOUND!!

This amazing “SWEETHEART” presentation example was likely SAILOR MADE, as it was discovered recently in a storage unit in BATH, MAINE

Signed, Dated and Profusely Decorated with polychromed Animals, Birds, Fish, Flora, Foliate, Nautical, Patriotic and Geometric Figures its decoration is concentrated on the “block” clamp and the central shaft of the swift. An exquisite American Flag is the largest of its decorative features and to top it all off the piece is signed and dated “P.A. BROOKS 1864”. Measures 24 1/4''tall with its integral base clamp (where the largest of its decorations are located) measuring 6 1/2” long x 1” wide.

An outstanding PRIOR – HAMBLEN school folk art portrait, likely by the hand of GEORGE G. HARTWELL (1815-1901) who was one of several portrait artists who married into the family of WILLIAM MATTHEW PRIOR (1806- 1873). This framed portrait of a strikingly handsome, fair haired and pensive twelve year old boy in a green coat with his yellow vest is inscribed (verso) in pencil, on its original frame: “John Edward Holmes Aged 12 1842”. Oil on paperboard measuring 17” x 13 ¼” (overall) 13 ½” x 9 1/2” (sight). John Edward Holmes became a boot maker in Stoughton, Massachusetts. Holmes was *born (in Stoughton) on August 4, 1829 and died there on Nov. 8, 1860 of peritonitis. In Stoughton, on January 21, 1850 he married Lucy Jane Britton of Easton, Mass., daughter of Joshua and Nancy (Field) Britton. They had no children.

*Information obtained from the book titled: The Descendants of George Holmes of Roxbury 1594-1908 by George Arthur Gray

This RARE, REMARKABLE and HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT pair of ca. 1900 ROAD” TRADE SIGNS features both Victorian Genre and Black Americana scenes. The signs serve notice of the Manawa, Wisconsin department store “E.L. DARLING” (shuttered permanently in 1906), which for ROAD TRAVELERS was soon to be in sight. Each measure 47” tall x 11 ¾” wide.

Superb original untouched condition throughout!

This EXTREMELY EARLY 18TH Century MAINE PEWTER DRESSER was discovered in the cellar coal bin of the Libby Farm at Scarborough, Maine and was transported “home” on the top of a nearly new 1963 Ford Falcon station wagon! In its original red paint and retaining its original drawer, its top moldings show partial loss otherwise, the cupboard is complete and original throughout. Measures 64” wide x 15 1/2” at its deepest and 85 ½” tall.

Rare 18th Century TRADE SIGN recently discovered during the demolition of an 18th Century building near Worcester, MA. Outstanding original paint atop “scoop” planed boards with “Rose Head” and early hand forged “T Head” nail construction. The sign doubled as an interior door which likely guarded the advertised contents. The construction is typical 18th Century “double deck” with the outer facing boards running horizontally and its “backboards” running vertically. Fabulous original paint! Measures (overall) 60 ¼” tall x 32 ¾” wide.

A rare SURVIVOR, this diminutive BOSTON Chippendale BLOCK FRONT CHEST was discovered in a Portland, Maine home in the 1960s and has remained the same Southern Maine collection ever since it was “picked” by our consignor. Crafted of the finest dense Mahogany and having spectacular proportions, the chest is in “as found” condition and has never before “seen the light of day”. The piece measures 32 ½” wide (at case) x 31” tall x 18 1/8” deep (at case).

Rare 1903 cast iron Horse & Rider (lady riding “side saddle”) TRADE SIGN “CINCINNATI STOVE WORKS TRADEMARK”. The “half profile” wall hanging sign is also marked (verso) “R CIN. IRON FDY CIN. O – 1903”. Measures 42" long x 27 ½” its tallest point. Found in a home near Bangor, Maine.
