At the request of his heirs,
Gould Auction Company is honored to present the entire
personal military collection of a World War II American Hero:
Colonel Leander D. Syme (1898-1985). Col. Syme was a 1918
graduate of West Point, served with the 17th Infantry Division;
Canal Zone Military Police; the 34th Infantry Division; the 159th
Infantry; and prior to the outbreak of World War II. Col. Syme was
an aide de camp of General Lassiter in the Dept. of Hawaii.
Assigned to the European Theatre of Operations in World War
II, Colonel Syme became the Commanding Officer of the 262nd Regiment
of the 66th "Black Panther" Division in Normandy, France.
There, his combat service saw him awarded the Silver Star,
The Bronze Battle Star ( 3 times) and the French Croix de Guerre,
along with many other combat decorations. Upon his
retirement from Military service in 1949 Colonel Syme retired to his
beloved gentleman's farm in New Vineyard, Maine. Colonel
Syme passed away on February 8, 1985 and was laid to rest with full
Military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on February 14, 1985.
His entire military wardrobe (including all uniforms from West Point
through WW2), head gear and hats, weapons (including his 1918 Colt
.45 auto. pistol , a rare "liberator" pistol and more), dress sword,
medals, official certificates of promotion, spurs, West Point
Yearbooks, orders and directives, photos, letters and much more.
Because of its complete Historical Record and Significance,
the collection of Col. Syme will be offered AS A COLLECTION
in its entirety. No exceptions will be made. It is the hope of the
family that the collection will be preserved, in its present state,
for historians and patriots to review for many generations to come.
