NAUTICAL ITEMS and SCRIMSHAW: A fine group of
recently discovered Whaling Ship Journals and Scrimshaw
items that were originally the property of Whaling Boat Steerer Albert
Almy Gifford of Westport, Massachusetts. According to records at the
New Bedford Whaling Museum, “Steerer” Gifford is listed as being at
the helm of the Westport Whaler “The Brig Mexico" in 1844 and 1845 as
well as the Whaling Bark "President" in 1849 and 1850. These pieces
are directly from Gifford’s ancestral home. Included in this group
are the original Whaling Ship Logs of the Westport, Mass. Whaling Bark
“PRESIDENT” from the years 1849 to 1850 and the 2 volume logs of the
Westport Whaling Brig “MEXICO” from the years 1844-1845, all of which
were recorded by Albert Almy Gifford. These Whaling Logs include
watercolors and drawings by Gifford of the mountains and topography of
the islands of the
AZORES, as well as
many WHALES stamped in the journal recording each “catch” along with
graphic descriptions of the actual catching and processing the Whales
as well as the actual accounting of barrels of whale oil taken each

MILITARY and FIREARMS: The complete collection of the
Military Issued belongings of Col. Leander D. Syme, (including a
"Liberator" pistol and his original 1911 Colt .45 auto with holster),
sword, medals, photos, spurs, trunks, orders and much more. Col. Syme
was the commanding officer of the 262nd Regiment of the 66th Black
Panther Division in World War II at Normandy, France. This collection
starts at West Point where the Colonel graduated in 1918 and extends
through the end of his distinguished military career in 1949. Colonel
Syme was awarded the Silver Star, 3 Bronze Battle Stars and the French
Croix de Guerre among other medals that will be included in the sale
of this RARE and complete historical grouping. Colonel Syme was laid
to rest February 14, 1985 at
Arlington
National
Cemetery.
