AN UNTOUCHED MAINE “COUNTRY” MASTERPIECE!


 





                                                    

 

Arriving in the past week (on 10-3-15) this “Attic Fresh” gem was discovered in the shed chamber of an early southwestern farmhouse. This is the FINEST MAINE CHAIR TABLE we have EVER SEEN! Of EXCEPTIONAL PROPORTION and PLEASING SIZE, this Very Early 19th Century Shoe Foot example is of the FINEST JOINERY and in the BEST ORIGINAL RED PAINT. Having a superbly scrubbed pine top, the table even retains its original “whittled” connecting rod!! Its feet and arms are of rock maple while all else is of northern pine. Wooden pegged and square nailed construction. Measures 41” top diameter (5/8” shrinkage) x 26 ½” tall (in closed or table position) x 52” tall (when in upright position). LOT # 59B in our order of sale.

LOT #72. (see our illustrated online catalog) A WONDERFUL 19th Century Folk Art example in its Fine Original Black Paint with remnants of its “tack” still attached!  38 ½” long x 17 ½” wide x 24 ¼” at tallest.

LOT #96. (see our illustrated online catalog) A LARGE and HIGHLY DETAILED 19th Century “GLIDER” in Superb Original Paint and having a RARE Upholstered Seat. Bearing the label of the: “WHITNEY REED CHAIR CO…..LEOMINSTER, MASS.” 42” long x 29 ¼” tall x 14 ¾” at widest.



    

 







 

This Charmingly Small “Untouched” Mid 18th Century Traveling” Country Queen Anne Mirror retains its Original Surface, Mirror Glass and Backboard. Having a “removable Crest which “dovetails” into its back, the piece is “undisturbed” throughout. 13 ¼”tall x 8 ¼” wide.



     
     

A CLASSIC PAIR of PRIOR-HAMBLEN SCHOOL PORTRAITS. Original period frames. Each measures 18 ¾” tall x 15 ½” wide (overall) and 14” x 10 ½” (sight).


A FINE SELECTION of EARLY MAINE HOOKED RUGS. The LARGE 19th Century FLORAL RUG was found in Belfast, Maine. The charming and VERY EARLY “CATSEYE” RUG is ca. 1840 and attributed to LAURA GILES of UNION, MAINE. The early 20th century “MAPLE SUGARING” RUG was found in Cannan, Maine. The Large “FLORAL” RUG measures 69” x 30 ½. “CATSEYE” RUG measures 19 ½” x 34”. The “SUGARING” rug measures 18 ½” x 35”.






THE “BEST” in FORM and SURFACE!
   




This superb PARIS, MAINE bed is wonderful for its TALL and BOLD FORM as well as its highly developed Red and Black GRAINING along with its rich BRONZE STENCILING and vivid GREEN BORDER STRIPING! Western Maine ca. 1820. The bed measures 53 ½” wide x 78” long x 51 ½” tall.





      




Recently discovered in a “Downeast” Maine attic this RARE early 20th Century Nautical Watercolor depicts the UNITED STATES LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE STEAMER (BUOY TENDER), the “ANEMONE”. Unsigned. Original Frame and Matting. Measures 20 ½” tall x 35 ½” wide (overall).

                  
     
  

A Diminutive and Very Early 18th Century Two Piece New England “Stepped Corner Cupboard in Original Red Paint. 31 ¾” wide (at base) x 79” tall x 18 ½” (corner depth).

A RARE 19TH Century HORSE & SULKY Weathervane in an excellent old surface and superb structural condition. Found in CT. Measures 31 ½” long x 17 ½” at tallest x 7 ½” at widest point (at sulky wheels).

 

     
 




     
     


A Fine Small EARLY 19TH Century “EYE DAZZLING” PAINT DECORATED CANADIAN CUPBOARD. Quebec Province ca. 1820. Measures 41” wide (case) x 62 ¾” tall and 17 ¾” deep.


  

  








 

A RARE and UNUSUAL Mid 19TH Century MECHANICAL MAINE TRADE SIGN. Recently discovered in the STOCKTON SPRINGS, MAINE home of a BARNES family descendant, the sign is said to have hung in the downtown district of BANGOR, MAINE in the mid 1800s. Measures 18 ¼” tall x 10 ¾” wide (when shut).















A Rare Early 18th Century American “Shoe Foot” Trestle Table in Original Red Paint. Its “scrubbed” two board breadboard ended top measures 67 ½” long x 39” wide and stands 28 ½” tall. From the Personal Collection of the late Marshall and Florence Stone of Hampden and Gouldsboro, Maine.





   

Recently found in the dark, dingy attic of a NORTH HAVEN ISLAND, MAINE home this LARGE 18th Century BRITISH Nautical Painting depicting Anglo and French Warships is in UNTOUCHED and AS FOUND condition! Unsigned. Measures 29” x 50 ½” (overall) and 25 1/2” x 47” (sight).

EARLY 19TH Century PARIS, MAINE PAINT DECORATED 4 DRAWER PINE CHEST in BOLD COLORS and PLEASING PROPORTIONS.


 


   










A MOST REMARKABLE dated 1879 FOLK ART INLAID TILT TOP AMERICAN VICTORIAN ERA CANDLE STAND. Among its PROLIFICLY INLAID VIGNETTES are its center medallion of a HORSE & RIDER. Vignettes at its faceted shaft including “PARTING” SOLDIER & WIFE; A WAR WEARY RETURNING SOLDIER and TWO GENTLEMEN GREETING BENEATH an UMBRELLA. Additional inlaid vignettes and figures that surround the central medallion of the top include: PATRIOTIC AMERICAN SYMBOLS such as LADY LIBERTY; FEDERAL SHIELD & EAGLE; AMERICAN FLAG above “1879”; BIRDS & ANIMALS; GENRE SCENES including A FARMER & WIFE; A BALLERINA; A “TOP HATTED” GENT with his WALKING STAFF; MOUNTED BOY ATOP his BURROW; BLACK CHILD and a MAN WRESTLING A BEAR. Likely crafted by a young or possibly immigrant craftsman who was obviously “strutting his stuff” in hopes of “catching the eye” of a potential customer or employer! Woods exhibited include black walnut, ebony, satinwood and maple. Top measures 20” diameter. Stand measures 27” tall. Discovered recently in a home near Bangor, Maine.
