A STUNNING RECENT ARRIVAL!!

Discovered last week in a Wisconsin home, this remarkable early 19th century primitive family portrait has wonderfully naive appeal. The oil on wood panel measures 21" x 16  1/2" and is as found and untouched condition. A rare and important folk art gem!

A SUPERB LAST MINUTE MAINE ADDITION!!

Discovered this week in the attic of an early Nobleboro, Maine farmhouse, this remarkably glazed Maine redware jar exhibits a dreamy glaze with outstanding color variation. Its greens are many and varied while its typical salmon colored under glaze bleeds through to be crimson red in places. A superior example of Maine redware, in immaculate original condition. Likely a Hollis, Maine area potter. Stands 8  1/2" tall. Outside top rim diameter measures 6  1/4".

Found recently in a home in Millinocket, Maine and originally from the Gilman family of Waterville, Maine, this fine folk art portrait of a "A Man and His Horse" is attributed to the noted Maine horse painter SCOTT LEIGHTON (1849-1898). Unframed and in untouched original condition. Oil on canvas measuring 20" x 30".

Recently discovered amongst an accumulation of early paper from the Silas Hastings Tavern in Boylston, Massachusetts, this historically significant handwritten letter is penned by ABIGAIL ADAMS (1744-1814) to her "soon to be" daughter in law Sarah "Sally" Smith (1769-1828). The letter is one of a particularly personal nature with a poignant declaration of Abigail's Christian devotion being its main message. "Sally" Smith would soon become the wife of Charles Adams (1770-1800), the second eldest son of President John Adams (1735-1826) and his wife Abigail. "Charlie" was also the younger brother of John Quincy Adams. The letter is in excellent original condition.

An excerpt:

"If I am not too young to die, I am not too young to prepare for it. How sweet, how comforting are the invitations of the blessed spirit. I will not attempt to speak his praises.....it is far beyond my feeble reach. How vile do my sins appear and how dark the crimes, that nothing but the precious blood of God's only son could attone for; and what daring sin would I again indulge to put my Lord to open shame. I trust there is none in which I would allow myself if I know my heart."

An extremely rare and unusual Woodlands Indian hooded coat with matching leggings and moccasins!! This early hand loomed and hand sewn wool coat is decorated with tinkle cones that contain dyed animal hairs that appear to be that of moose or perhaps caribou. The loomed sash is intricately patterned as are the decorations to its shoulder cuffs. Each of the matching leggings have their own loomed "ties". The hide moccasins have their original hand loomed wool liners. A rare surviving early ensemble, found "Downeast" in Maine. Possibly Passamaquoddy.

Discovered in the attic of the Silas Hastings Tavern, this early sign was hung by Captain John Andrews (a relative of Silas Hastings) of Boylston, MA upon taking ownership of the tavern in 1844. The sign is in immaculate condition that includes all of its original hanging hardware. The sign measures 20 ½'’ tall x 50 3/4'’ wide.

TWO WONDERFUL EXAMPLES

of
PAINT DECORATION

The rural American effort to enhance the surface of "just plain pine" is classically chronicled in these two pieces, which hail from two Eastern States known for their paint decorated softwood.....Maine and Pennsylvania. These two recently discovered pieces are vivid and bold in their simulations of wood grains. The Maine CANDLE BOX features typically "loud" paint strokes and SKOWHEGAN bronze stenciled decoration on its lid, while the superb and tight rosewood graining of the signed (boldly initialed "JL" on its underside) Pennsylvania DOLL'S CHEST is attributed to JOSEPH LEHN (1798-1892) of Lancaster County. The Maine candle box is pine throughout and measures 15 ½'’ long x 5 ½'’ tall x 8'’ wide. The Pennsylvania chest has pine drawer fronts, walnut feet and poplar drawer sides. It measures 13 1/4'’ wide x 11 7/8'’ tall x 8 1/4'’ deep.

Found in the SILAS HASTINGS TAVERN, this rare 18th century paint decorated Queen Anne blanket chest has classic cabinetry, western Massachusetts wood content, signature design and stylish striped drawers over its original faux wood grained paint. Peppered with "rosehead" nails, blessed with generously wide dovetails and partial "bat wing" brasses, original snipe hinges and its original under-lid cleats (also with rosehead nails), its pine case with chestnut secondary wood is exactly what one might expect to find in ca. 1760 Boylston, MA cabinetry. Its wooden "clothes pin" drawer pulls are late 18th century or early 19th century replacements.....otherwise this chest is untouched throughout. It's underside is instructional and remarkable, as is its interior. A rare survivor with an impeccable provenance! 41 ½'’ wide x 41 ½'’ tall x 18'’ deep

Directly from a home in the coastal village of Castine, Maine this MONUMENTAL 19th century PLATER'S HALF HULL or MAKER'S MODEL measures one inch short of 11 feet in length! The RARE hull retains its ORIGINAL PAINT which is blanketed with all of it's original hand drawn, SCALED CALCULATIONS which appear in "blue print" form over the entire painted surface of the hull, as well as on its unpainted deck. Its craftsmanship is amazing, having undetectably tight joints to each of its nine "lifts" or vertically stacked laminations. The finished vessel produced from this scaled hull, when finished measured 275 feet in length. A remarkable nautical work of art in superb original condition! Complete with its original brass hangers, its measurements are: Length 131" Height 12"  Depth 9" (front to back).

Recently discovered in the attic of the Hastings Tavern, this set of 4 BALLOON BACK WINDSOR SIDE CHAIRS contain a SPECTACULAR "UNTOUCHED" PAIR. The PAIR of chairs survive in their original black paint with delicately stenciled foliate leg decoration and original red painted seats......and then there are their REMARKABLY SIGNED SEAT BOTTOMS! The two less fortunate matching chairs (one over painted, the other in great original paint but missing its center spindle) could readily be restored to make a complete set of four. However, if you're looking for a GREAT PAIR, these are for you! Seat height (of each) 18 ½'’ with overall height of 37 ½'’ tall  x  17 1/4'’ wide  x  16 1/4'’ deep.

Discovered recently on a porch of the Silas Hastings Tavern, this bold and profusely cobalt decorated J & E. NORTON, BENNINGTON 3 GALLON WATER COOLER exhibits a complete panoramic scene which includes (from center to right) a HOUSE, a large and folky TREE, a BIRD on a STUMP, a second HOUSE (with trees), a BEDDED DEER (laying at the end of a fence)   and a small BIRD in a TREE! Its blue decoration is richly and deeply colored and superb! There is a  crack in its back side and two small areas of glazing loss that are NOT in the decorated areas. Otherwise SUPERB! A stunning MARKET FRESH piece with an impeccable provenance!

.

A SUPERB, RARE and UNTOUCHED 6' 8" MAINE HARVEST TABLE in a SUPERB SURFACE. Remarkable scrubbed Pine Top with Birch Frame and Legs. Discovered recently in the shed a Northern Maine Farmhouse. Table Measures 80" long x 21  1/4" when closed x 45" (when leaves are up) and 28" tall. Overall condition is untouched and as found.

THE FINEST LATHE TURNED AMERICAN BURL BOWL THAT WE HAVE EVER HANDLED!

Its superior "concentric ring" turnings, delicately shaped top rim lip, great original surface and color, impressive vertical stance and generous overall size, combine to make this bowl a rare and visually stunning piece! Measures 16  1/4" top rim diameter and stands a full 6" tall.

A wonderfully bucolic New England folk art oil on canvas of a "Cape Cod" style farmhouse and its environs. OOC laid down on board. Later framing. 18  1/2" x  24  1/2" (sight)   23  1/2" by 29  3/4" (overall).

A rare survivor! This recently discovered Massachusetts Walnut Queen Anne Lowboy is in as found condition. Original surface and brass. A wonderful fan carved drawer and having original "shaved" back feet. Measures 30" case width x 31  1/2" tall  x 17  5/8" case depth. Top measures 34" x 19".

Absolutely the BEST RED canopy bed that we have ever seen! This vibrantly painted Sheraton canopy bed is of exquisite craft and pleasingly delicate proportions. A superior COMPLETE and ORIGINAL example that is "best in form and surface"!! Recently found in NH with a provenance indicating a Portsmouth attribution. Measures 79" tall x 55  1/4" (to outside of rails) x  78  1/2" long (to outside of rails).

This EYE DAZZLING Braided Rug is ROOM SIZED and of extraordinary color and design. Measures a generous 132" by 75" or 11" by 6' 3".

A superbly composed and exuberantly colored folk art watercolor in its original gadrooned edge lemon gold frame. Rendered on an early signed "Reynolds Bristolboard" which is mounted on paper. Recently discovered in the attic of the Silas Hastings Tavern. Measures 17" x 21" (overall) and  15 1/4" x 19  1/2" (sight).

A sampling of several painted boxes to include paint decorated wood and tin. The boldly "feather" painted black and yellow box exhibits a very rare and early CT lock made and signed by James Terry of Terryville (Plymouth), CT who was  a member of the noted Plymouth clock making family of Eli and Samuel Terry. The box measures 19" wide x 13  1/4" tall and 10  3/4" deep. The profusely "sponge" paint decorated dome top document box was found in the upper reaches of the Silas Hastings Tavern. It measures 17  1/2" wide x 10  1/2" tall and 10  1/2" deep. The adorably small, dome top tin document box is in incredible blue paint with its initialed and striped decoration being of a "shadowed" salmon color. It measures 6  1/2" wide x 4  3/4" tall and 4  1/2" deep. The condition of each of these three boxes is superb.

A sampling of superb and rare American glass lamps and candlesticks to include Boston & Sandwich Glass Company examples. Found in a closet of the Silas Hastings Tavern, the PAIR of Boston & Sandwich Glass Company AMETHYST colored Whale Oil Lamps are in the LOOP pattern and are complete with their original burners. They measure 10  3/4" tall.

The diminutive Boston & Sandwich Glass Company "Clam Broth" candlesticks are also in the LOOP pattern. They measure 6 3/4" tall.

The EXCEEDINGLY RARE (we have been unable to locate another example) pair of SHIELD and STAR pattern kerosene lamps have exquisitely deep CRANBERRY GLASS fonts atop their vividly contrasting flint glass "milk" white bases. This pair measures 9  1/2" tall.

The tall Boston & Sandwich Glass Company HEART PATTERN Whale Oil Lamps also retain their original burners. They measure 11" tall.

This rare NEWPORT, R.I. Queen Anne drop leaf "breakfast" table is crafted of the BEST, heavily figured and extraordinarily dense mahogany. In a very unusual and petite size (between the "baby" size and the full sized breakfast tables), the table has its original signature "floating top" with its underside blocks being removable. The blocks are replacements, and one foots pad is "pieced in", otherwise the table is original throughout with a superb old and likely original surface.  The table measures x 33 ½'’ long  x  12 ½'’ wide (when closed) and stands 25 ½'’ tall  and 38 1/4'’  x  25  1/2" (when open).
